TURNER CENTERfor ENTREPRENEURSHIP

For Brandon Johnson and Ohm Vyas, innovation started with a question: What if technology could help protect people in real-time during dangerous situations? While studying mechanical engineering at Bradley University, Brandon and Ohm began exploring ways to address growing concerns around public safety. They developed a technology-driven solution designed to respond in real time during emergencies, helping create critical moments for individuals to get to safety.

As the concept evolved, the team continued refining their technology to make it more practical, scalable, and adaptable across different environments. What emerged was ShotHawk, a device that integrates with existing security systems and uses advanced detection technology to identify threats and respond with non-lethal deterrents. With applications ranging from retail settings to schools and other high-traffic spaces, ShotHawk is designed to enhance safety while giving people the time and space they need to react in dangerous situations.

Today, ShotHawk is preparing for its first deployment, with an initial focus on retail environments where employee safety is a growing concern. The device is designed to activate during emergencies, helping to create critical time for individuals to get to safety. While schools and larger institutions remain a long-term goal, early traction in retail has provided a strong pathway to market entry.

Building a company at the intersection of hardware, AI, and public safety comes with unique challenges. They have largely bootstrapped their efforts, supplementing their progress through grants and national pitch competitions, including recognition at events like  SXSW and TechCrunch. These opportunities helped them gain visibility, validate their concept, and build momentum toward launch.

A key part of ShotHawk’s journey has been the support from the Illinois Small Business Development Center and the Turner Center for Entrepreneurship at Bradley University. Advisors, Jim Foley, Eric Sampson, and Chris Youngmark, played an instrumental role in helping the team navigate early business decisions, secure funding opportunities, and build key industry connections.

“One of the most pivotal moments for us was securing a major grant through connections made at the Turner Center,” Brandon shared. “Without that support, our company simply wouldn’t exist. It gave us the validation and resources we needed to keep moving forward.”

Beyond funding, Bradley University helped shape the foundation of the business. Through coursework and mentorship, Brandon and Ohm gained critical insights into customer discovery, intellectual property, and business strategy, tools that directly influenced the company’s ability to pivot and grow. These experiences, combined with connections made through Peoria’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, have positioned ShotHawk for continued success.

As ShotHawk approaches its official launch, Brandon and Ohm remain focused on scaling the technology and expanding into new markets. Their vision is clear: to create safer environments by delivering innovative solutions that protect people when it matters most.

The Turner Center is proud to support ShotHawk as they continue to push the boundaries of innovation and build a company with the potential to make a lasting impact.
