For Jack Boss, entrepreneurship didn’t wait until after graduation, it started while he was still a student at Bradley University. What began with just two pallets of flooring and a simple Facebook Marketplace listing quickly evolved into Floor Boss, a fast-growing, full-service flooring business serving residential, commercial, and property management clients across Central Illinois.
Jack officially launched his business in 2023, initially focusing on selling flooring materials. With strong roots in the industry, coming from a sixth-generation family background in flooring, he combined inherited knowledge with a fresh, modern approach. Early on, he leaned into building relationships, connecting with customers, and delivering a high-quality experience. Within a year, he expanded beyond materials and began offering installation services, which significantly accelerated growth and demand.
As the business scaled, so did the complexity. What started as a one-person operation quickly grew into a full team that now includes sales staff, installers, subcontractors, and support roles. Today, Floor Boss handles a wide variety of projects, from small residential updates to large commercial jobs, all while maintaining a reputation for fast turnaround times and competitive pricing. Remarkably, this growth has been fueled almost entirely by word-of-mouth referrals and strong customer relationships, without relying on paid advertising.
But rapid growth hasn’t come without challenges. While still in college, Jack found himself balancing coursework with the demands of running a business, often taking calls during exams or stepping away from class to handle urgent job site issues. “There were times I didn’t know how much longer I could keep doing both,” he shared. “It was stressful trying to manage everything at once.” With support from his professors, he was able to find flexibility and continue pursuing both his education and his business.
Operational challenges also tested his resilience. At one point, the company’s warehouse became unsafe, forcing Jack and his team to quickly relocate dozens of pallets of inventory within days. Situations like this required fast decision-making, adaptability, and leadership, skills Jack developed in real time as his business grew.
Throughout his journey, Jack has leaned on mentorship and resources from the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Bradley University. Early on, he built a strong relationship with Eric Sampson, who became a trusted advisor and mentor. “Eric has always been there for me,” Jack says. “If I have a question or need guidance, he helps connect me with the right people and shows me how to handle situations in a professional way.” Through these connections, Jack gained valuable insights into organization, business operations, and scaling effectively.
Today, Jack leads a growing team with a culture centered around flexibility, trust, and strong relationships – both internally and with clients. His approach is simple but powerful: respond quickly, deliver quality work, and create a positive experience for every customer. That mindset has helped Floor Boss Peoria stand out in an industry often known for slower timelines and less responsive service.
Looking ahead, Jack continues to focus on scaling operations, expanding capacity, and strengthening his team. What started as a small college side hustle has quickly become a serious business, and it’s only getting started.
The Turner Center is proud to support Jack Boss and Floor Boss as he continues to grow his business, create jobs, and make an impact in the Central Illinois community.
