BoardSERVE: The Fundamentals of Serving on a Nonprofit Committee or Board of Directors

Learn the basics of what goes into serving on a nonprofit committee or board of directors through our BoardSERVE seminars. Through engaging presentations and conversations, participants will learn about the financial, structural, and strategic components of serving on a nonprofit committee or board. After completing the seminars, Heart of Illinois United Way will stay connected with participants to connect them with local agencies when opportunities arise.

TOPICS OF DISCUSSION: 

  • The intent of our BoardSERVE seminar is to equip participants with the knowledge they need to serve effectively on a nonprofit board or committee. Specific topics covered include finance, structures, strategy, and types of nonprofit boards. The session is lecture-based but offers ample opportunities for discussion.
  • Through the BoardSERVE seminar, you will participate in dynamic presentations and conversations designed to prepare you for impactful board service. The skills you will develop will help you support local nonprofits in creating lasting change.

Our Speakers:

Jennifer Zammuto, President of the Heart of Illinois United Way 

Jennifer Zammuto started her career in international exports and marketing (with certifications from Bradley University’s Turner Center), working at L.R. Nelson Corporation and Converse Marketing focused on advertising, corporate communications, and public relations before transitioning into philanthropic work for the Caterpillar Foundation. An active community member, she served on almost every committee at the Heart of Illinois United Way before accepting the leadership role as President in 2018. Previously, she was a member of Downtown Rotary, CEO Council and the Center for Prevention of Abuse Board. Currently, Jennifer serves on the Greater Peoria EDC Governing Board, Nominating Committee and serves as Secretary, on the LISC Central Illinois Board, Choose Greater Peoria, Regional Workforce Alliance, the Health Care Collaborative, the Tri County Partnership for a Healthy Community, Al Hooks Black Leadership Initiative and Bradley University’s Turner School for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Advisory Council, serves as a judge for their Social Impact Challenge and the Big Idea competition and more.

Heather Robertson, VP of Resource Development  

Heather Robertson serves as Vice President of Resource Development at the Heart of Illinois United Way. Her role is centered on storytelling, sharing the stories of impact with local donors through workplace campaign leadership. Heather’s career journey has included public education, ministry, advocacy and community partnerships. Corporate philanthropy is a through line, allowing her to draw people together with a shared mission of community transformation.  

Nicole Wilson, Vice President of Community Development

Nicole Wilson serves as Vice President of Community Investment at the Heart of Illinois United Way, where she leads community investment, nonprofit partnerships, and collaborative efforts addressing complex community needs. With more than 20 years of experience in local government, grants, and community development, Nicole has built her career around bringing people, organizations, and resources together to create meaningful community impact.
